Upcoming High School Reunion

Posted by sam, Sun Feb 17 22:36:48 UTC 2008

Last night I ran into a classmate of mine from high school at a bar. It's always good catching up with people you haven't seen in a while, trading stories about people, stuff like that.

I graduated Lyons Township High School in 1999. We didn't have cell phones, and there was no Facebook then. We all used AOL, yes the AOL, back then to communicate. Damn, looking back now, it was kind of prehistoric.

Side note: One girl had a cell phone back in high school. Her boyfriend called her in the middle of US History class, and it was completely hilarious! If Mr. Price was in class that day, I bet he would have taken the phone and started talking to the guy. This incident happened in winter 1998. 3 years later just about everyone had a cell phone.

I noted to Carrie that by next summer when we all see each other at our reunion, we will all know everything about each other due to Facebook. I'm getting friend requests from people I haven't seen or talked to in years.

Another thing on my mind is the pervasiveness of Google. I'm a professional computer programmer who collaborates on several open source projects, and I leave a huge digital trail (although it's kind of funny my Dad comes up first!). My roommate has a common name and is all but invisible online. You really have to know where to look to find him online.

At least I'll have some interesting things to talk about. An old classmate of mine is the DC Press Secretary for Barack Obama's Senate Office or Presidential Campaign. I'm proud of him for his work. Even his prom date gave him props online for getting his picture taken going through the drive-through of a McDonald's on foot.
